Updating your website can be intimidating. Deciding to build a website from scratch? Even scarier. Between trying to decide who should build your website, what theme your website will follow, what colors you will use, and what images to include, it can feel overwhelming. All of these different aspects of your website are important and need consideration, but oftentimes people will focus so much on the design of their website they’ll forget to give enough consideration for the content of their site. Here are some guidelines to help you know what content you should or should not be including on your site.
1) Contact Us
Every website should have a contact page. The entire goal of your website is likely to have more people reach out to you and buy your service or product. The contact page is where you give people the information they need to reach out to you. If you have a physical location for your business, you should include your address and maybe even a link with directions to reach your building. It can seem troublesome to blatantly put your email on a webpage and worry about spammers contacting you. Instead of listing your email, place a contact form on your site that will send your visitor’s information directly to your email without your visitor having to know your information. This will help filter out a lot of spammy inquiries.
2) About Us
An about us page and contact us page have two different goals. You could choose to combine these pages, but, personally, I like the cleanliness of having two different pages. An about us page is dedicated to telling your visitor who you are, not just how to get in touch with you. This page is to brag about the history of your company and provide information about your employees. Potential clients who want to know more about you will use this page to see if you seem like a good fit for them.
3) Testimonials
One of the brilliant things about the internet is that we can find reviews for almost any product or company within seconds. Potential clients will likely want to read a few testimonials about your company before they decide to use you. Dedicating an entire webpage to testimonials is a great way to help potential clients feel like they are safe to hire you for the job.
4) FAQs
This is not a page that every single website needs. However, if you find that you are constantly being asked the same questions, you can save yourself time, and your potential clients some energy, by creating a FAQ page. There is no wrong way to build an FAQ page. Simply think about what questions your company is commonly asked, and answer those questions. Don’t worry about having too little or too many questions.
5) Services/Products
If your business provides a service or sells a product, you need to have a webpage dedicated to selling or explaining the service. Some web companies, like Smartly Done Websites, will help you make it so customers can buy products or request services right off your site. On this page be sure to display images and provide descriptions of your products and services. You can also include a contact form at the bottom of this page to encourage visitors to reach out to you with any questions they might have.
